hide – Tough, easy to work, stretch and mould; takes
dyes well and is available in a number of thicknesses from 1mm to
6mm. Sold by the square foot, from a strap to a whole hide. Goat
hide – Easy to work and stretch. Takes dyes well
and is available in pieces below 6sqft and is about 1.0mm –
1.5mm thick. The surface is not as even as cow hide. Sheep
skin – Thin, pale, soft, good for purses, gloves
and clothing and takes colour well. Only available at 1mm. Rawhide
– Rawhide is tough and hard when dry but can be worked wet.
It is used mainly as a binding and edging material. Cow is about
2-3mm and deer is about 1mm. Does not take colour well. Ray
skin –Only occasionally available. Thin and rough
and also known as shagreen; use as a traditional sand paper or grip
material. Does not take dye well. Thong
- 3mm square and 2mm and 3mm round vegetan cow hide thong and hand
cut rawhide thong.
